Mentor Days (6 Half-Days)
The goal of the Mentor Program is to bring together freshmen with upperclassmen to assist with the transition from Middle School to High School.
Horizon values the time all students are in class; therefore, the mentor days are held when classes are 35 minutes in length.
Each Mentor will spend time (six of the half-days allotted by the District) with the freshmen listening to their concerns and support them in making positive decisions. During the meetings, Mentors review upcoming events, discuss the registration process for the next school year, review school rules, offer tutoring services, and answer questions or concerns.
The mentors meet with the freshmen during the freshmen english class period on half-days only. Teachers escort their class to the multi-purpose room each half-day. It is important for all of our students to be well-rounded academically, as well as socially. The Mentors attend extensive summer training and participate in anti-bully training, communication skills, and mental health workshops. Mentors are selected based upon grades, attendance, discipline, and teacher recommendation.
Being a mentor is an important volunteer position on our campus. Mentors serve as tour guides to parents and students, as new student guides to all grade levels, and they volunteer during other school events.
