Course Information
Students will be placed in core classes based on the following guidelines for each department. When there is a disagreement, an opt-out form can be submitted and signed by the parent to have the change made. Please be aware, if students opt-out of education advice changes to the appropriate class will not be possible in the future as our classes are staffed to student requests.
English Progression
Current Course
English 1-2
- Will progress to English 3-4
- May progress to Honors English 3-4 if have A’s
Honors English 1-2
- Will progress to Honors English 3-4 if have a 3.0 average
- Under a 3.0 average should progress to English 3-4
English 3-4
- Will progress to English 5-6
- Should not progress to AP English 5-6
- Can progress to DE English 5-6 if have at least a 3.0 (B) average. Should have at least a 2.6 unweighted GPA otherwise will need to complete NextGen Testing.
Honors English 3-4
- Will progress to AP English 5-6 if they have a 3.0 average
- Under a 3.0 average should progress to English 5-6
- Can progress to DE English 5-6 if they have at least a 3.0 (B) average. Should have at least a 2.6 unweighted GPA otherwise will need to complete NextGen Testing.
English 5-6
- Will progress to English 7-8
- Should not progress to AP English 7-8
- Under a 3.0 average should progress to English 7-8
- Can progress to ENG 101 if have at least a 2.5 (C/B) average. Should have at least a 2.6 unweighted GPA otherwise they will need to earn
Honors English 5-6
- Will progress to AP English 7-8 if they have a 3.0 average
- Under a 3.0 average should progress to English 7-8

9th Grade
- Biology
- Is appropriate if the student is receiving standard level instruction.
- Honors Biology 1-2
- Is appropriate if the student has a previous history getting A’s and B’s in honors level classes
- Honors Chemistry
- Is appropriate if the student passes Honors Biology with an A or B average (or teacher recommendation from their current Biology class.)
10th Grade
- Chemistry
- Is appropriate if standard level.
- Honors Chemistry
- Is appropriate if the student has taken biology and physics and is recommended for Honors Chemistry by their current science teacher.
- AP Physics
- Is appropriate if the student is receiving honors level chemistry instruction. Teacher recommendation is appropriate as well.
- AP Biology
- Is appropriate if the student has taken prerequisite science classes at the honors level (Honors Biology and Honors Chemistry) and has taken or is concurrently taking AP Physics. Teacher recommendation from standard level curriculum is appropriate as well.
- AP Chemistry
- Is appropriate if the student has taken prerequisite classes at the honors level (Honors Biology and Honors Chemistry) and has taken or is concurrently taking AP Physics. Teacher recommendation from standard level curriculum is appropriate as well.
- Anatomy
- Is appropriate if the student has taken prerequisite classes of biology and chemistry and has taken or is currently taking physics
- Environmental Science
- Is appropriate if the student has a history of earning D’s or below in their math class. Chemistry is the preferred class for University admissions. Environmental Science is not an “easy” class but it is less math intensive. Students will not be ABOR approved if they have previously taken Integrated Science.
11th Grade
- AP Physics
- Is appropriate if the student is receiving honors level biology and chemistry instruction. Teacher recommendation is appropriate as well.
- AP Biology
- Is appropriate if the student has taken prerequisite science classes at the honors level (Honors Biology and Honors Chemistry) and has taken or is concurrently taking AP Physics. Teacher recommendation from standard level curriculum is appropriate as well (must count as 4th or elective science credit)
- AP Chemistry
- Is appropriate if the student has taken prerequisite classes at the honors level (Honors Biology and Honors Chemistry) and has taken or is concurrently taking AP Physics. Teacher recommendation from standard level curriculum is appropriate as well (must count as 4th or elective science credit)
- Anatomy
- Is appropriate if the student has taken prerequisite classes of Biology and Chemistry and has taken or is currently taking Physics
- Environmental Science
- Is appropriate if the student has taken 3 required science courses. Students will not be ABOR approved if they have previously taken Integrated Science.
Social Studies Progression
Current Grade
9th Grade
- Students will proceed to World History.
- AP World History is appropriate when the student has at least 3.5 average in regular English or 3.0 average in Honors English.
10th Grade
- Students will proceed to American History.
- AP US History is appropriate when the student has at least 3.5 average in regular World History and English or 3.0 average in AP World History.
11th Grade
- Students will proceed to Econ/Gov.
- AP Econ/AP Gov is appropriate when the student has at least 3.5 average in regular American History and English or 3.0 average in AP US History. Students should take BOTH AP classes but can split. Splitting may cause disruptions in the schedule from first to second semester.
